The rise and rise and rise of Lewis Hamilton continued unabated in Germany Sunday when he took his 91st win from 261 Grand Prix starts. While sharing an almost identical win rate with fourth placed Jim Clark ... Hamilton extended his points lead over the brilliant Scot by 1.1 points per race, a significant margin. From Clark's cockpit the gap to Lewis may soon be unassailable ... if it isn't already.

Meanwhile ... Alberto Ascari's 70 year hold on second place is coming under pressure. Essentially ... for Lewis to comfortably take the road from one of the Ferrari aristocracy he'll need four wins from the next six races. And that's it. Of course he has to hold his position. The story of the fall of great champions is a common one.

Catch Fangio? It is theoretically possible. But frankly ... the gap between Fangio and Ascari is one of the biggest on the grid. Fangio is a very long way up the road it would be extremely tough to close that gap. This ranking is like the old thousand mile Mille Miglia not a sprint. It's a career long race. And in that race Lewis gave Fangio too much at the start.
